A soldier from The Light Dragoons has been killed in Afghanistan after his vehicle hit a roadside bomb, the Ministry of Defence says.

According to the BBC, the incident took place in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province, said Lt Col Richard Parry, spokesman for UK Forces Afghanistan.

The soldier’s next of kin have been informed. The death brings the number of British military deaths since operations began in Afghanistan in 2001 to 427.

It comes two days after Guardsman Karl Whittle of The Queen’s Company, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards died in hospital in the UK from gunshot wounds sustained in an attack in the same area on 14 August.
